Xeriscaping Going Green In Your Landscape

The Xeriscape Symbol
While having a garden is rewarding and enjoyable, a lot of people just don’t have the time that is required to maintain it. Whether you have too much going on at work , too many kids ,or outside activities that take up your time you may feel your just too busy for a garden. That is not necessarily true you can still have a nice garden and go green at the same time by using a gardening method known as Xeriscaping.
.
Xeriscaping first emerged in Colorado when water levels were at an all time low. It is a great method of having a great looking yard or garden, without having to maintain it or water it very often at
all. By using plants that are native to the region and proper design the use of supplemental watering in the landscape is almost eliminated all together

Advantages Of Xeriscape

* Lower water consumption.
* More water available for other uses and other people.
* Less time and work needed for maintenance, making gardening simpler and less work.
* Little or no lawn mowing saves energy and more environmentally friendly.
* Xeriscape plants along with proper bed design tends to take full advantage of rainfall
* When water restrictions are implemented, xeriscape plants will tend to survive saving money.

In Colorado, many places are offering free Xeriscaping lessons in order to encourage the conservation of water. If your area is undergoing a drought, you should check with the water department and see if they
are offering lessons. If you attend those, you will be able to get advice specific to your region (IE types of plants to grow, how much to water them, etc).

Florida has become the first to enact a statewide Xeriscape law. Florida recognized that its growing population and vulnerable environment dictated legal safeguards for its water resources. The Xeriscape law requires Florida’s Departments of General Services and Transportation to use Xeriscape landscaping on all new public properties and to develop a five-year program to phase in Xeriscape on existing properties. All local governments must also consider requiring the use of Xeriscape and offering incentives to install Xeriscaping. In most parts of the country half of the municipal water supplies go to irrigate residential lawns and gardens.

To some, the name Xeriscaping brings to mind the picture of a yard that consists of a giant rock bed. However, this is known as “zero scaping”, and it is a considerably a different from Xeriscaping . It focuses on reducing your yard to something that requires no maintenance whatsoever. Unfortunately usually just rocks. But this shouldn’t be your goal. While keeping maintenance at a minimum, it is very possible to obtain a nice looking yard that deter the appearance of the neighborhood and the wrath of your neighbors.

This might sound like it would be hard to do without making your yard into a terrible looking mess, but this is not case. The idea is to design using the right plants which are low maintenance to begin with, then
planting them each in the ideal environment This can be accomplished by figuring out the right place to plant by mapping out your yard as to shade and sun areas. Also group plants with similar water requirements together

How To Get Started

    * Pick out plants that are native to your area
    * Pick out plants that do not require lots of water
    * Always place plants with like water requirements together
    * Plant in the right location
    * Protect the plants from excessive sun or wind

So if it sounds to you like something you want to do to save time and water by renovating your
garden, you should look for xeriscaping lessons.
