What a week at the urban garden so far. Saturday Ice storms, Monday night Ice storms, and they say snow Tonight and on Thursday. We have not started the winter season like this in a while at the urban garden. And winter officially does not start for another for another 11 days.
I think this may be a long winter. It really is not going to surprise me at all if we have a lot of winter weather events this year. It may surprise the administration though.The current hospital administration has been here about 7 years and e have had relatively mild winters with not a lot of snow events. I remember a time when we would go for two weeks at a time with 3 and 4 inch snowfalls every other day. Aside from being in a state of perpetual exhaustion this really did not pose a big problem. Of course that was back when we could stack snow around the parking lot perimeters now there is no place for that so when we have 6 or 8 inches of snow we will need to relocate to open parking spaces. It is an expensive proposition but will be necessary I did point this out about two dozen times during the planning and again during the construction of the new lots but it seemed only a minor concern to management at the time. To the general public snow is an inconvenience that is quickly forgotten but for those of us who actually have to clean it up we remember all to well what mother nature can reek and do not forget what it takes and costs. I think one day that Management will not be pleased when they get a real winter and start looking at costs of $100,000.00 plus for snow and ice abatement.
The only answer that I have found after all these years is prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Oh and be very sympathetic when management starts to complain about the costs.
