Winter Solstice 2016 occurred here at Glenns Garden at 4:44 A.M. this morning December 21,2016. This date also is considered the first day of Winter here in the United States. After the solstice arrives we start to gain daily daylight as winter heads towards Spring. On a daily average in the month of January, between 1.5 to 2 minutes of daylight are gained each day. In February, about 2 1/2 minutes of daylight are gained each day while this may not seem like much but by the end of February we will be having over an extra hour of light each day which is great for the spirit if nothing else.
This is a day I always look forward to because we are that much closer to the Spring that is when the earth is really starting to shake off it’s long winters rest and come to life again in blazes of color.Every year I love to go out for a walk around the flower beds in March and check to see if the tulips and daffodils are pushing their leaves out of the slowly warming ground.
More than anything else is when I spot the first Robin Red Breast out on the lawn that is when I get into full gardening mode and chomping at the bit to get out and work in the soil. That is the start of a whole new season of surprises and a chance to start something new and create.
As you can see I chose a school bus for this article mainly to remind you that when you are driving YOU NEED TO BE AWARE there is PRECIOUS CARGO i that bus so give them courtesy AND OBEY THOSE STOP SIGNS AND RED FLASHING LIGHTS! Yes I am a special needs bus driver and you would be appalled at the way some people drive around a bus full of children. Be Careful Please.
