After Halloween and with the approach of Thanksgiving the weather has a way of letting you know that it is about to change. It is also a reminder that while birds have been visiting your garden all summer the food they were enjoying is about to be very scarce. It would be very good if you were to supplement there food supply by setting up some bird feeders in the yard, and before Thanksgiving Day is the perfect time. This will give the birds a chance to find the feeders. Don’t be alarmed if you have not had bird feeders before it may take some times for they birds to find them. After a couple of birds have visited believe me they will spread the word through the neighborhood and you will be quickly receiving a lot of visitors.
When winter arrives it becomes very hard on the birds to find food and they have to search from dawn till dusk to find enough food to keep themselves healthy. Their body temperature is one hundred and eight degrees. This requires a lot of carbohydrates to keep their metabolism up. Fatty foods are very important to winter birds and can be provided by suet or peanut butter mixed with seeds, berries, and fruit to make a delicious cake that will provide the birds with a great nutritional boost. When you buy food be sure and buy seed the birds will eat black oil sunflower seed and white millet seed mixes should contain large amounts of these and avoid mixes that contain a lot of fillers like wheat seeds and milo the birds won’t eat them and that is just a waste of money.
Speaking of money it is estimated by the U.S. Fish And Wildlife Service that over forty one million people spend more than two billion dollars a year on bird feeding so you would be in good company in providing for our feathered friends over the winter. Some people purchase an electric heater for the bird bath to keep water available. If you do this please be sure to clean them on a regular bases to avoid a build up of bacteria or disease.
I would be remiss if I did not mention one last thing. Squirrels some people hate them with a passion others love to watch their hi jinks. If you do not like feeding the squirrels there are bird feeders that are squirrel proof. But personally I think they deserve a break too and they are pretty amusing to watch.
Along with food birds really need water and once the ponds and creeks freeze over it is hard for them to get enough to stay well hydrated. A bird bath with two or three inches of water can be placed in the yard and changed two or three times a day as it starts to freeze.
