Seems to me that more and more I am seeing fire and water features on the garden shows now a days. Some of these are pretty unique ideas and really show a lot of imagination. I have both of these in my garden but they are a bit farther apart and not as fancy as some set ups I have seen with the fire floating on the water.
I have often thought about some of the designs I have seen and thought they were nice but more times than not I am sure I would never do something like that in my own garden. I have made the determination over the years that I have simple tastes, I prefer the less sophisticated and more natural look and my
wants are pretty basic. I would prefer and older home that was smaller and easier to maintain and keep up. I like the idea of not having lots of cleaning and extra work more time I can devote to gardening.
I know everyone has their own ideas on this so I really do not want you to think I am judging anyone I am only expressing my way of thinking. My fire pit is just that, it is a hole dug out and surrounded by curved concrete block. Around the outside the area is gravel for safety reasons in case of hot sparks or cinders. It is very functional and over the years has made 100’s of the best tasting hot dogs and at least a ton of smores. It is not fancy it is just functional. It serves the purpose for which it is intended and that is why I built it. On cool spring and fall evenings the crackling fire is a comfortable place to sit by and enjoy the evening.
The same goes for the water feature I wanted to grow some waterlilies and also provide a feature which would attract birds, butterflies, and other garden creatures. I enjoy the sound of the waterfall but I much more enjoy the wild critters that depend on it for fresh water and shelter that come to visit. I could have gotten real fancy with all kinds of imported rocks and specialized equipment but I chose it to be functional and it is as well as being attractive to me.
My garden is very functional and people are always complementing me but is not for the recognition that I planted my garden it is for the sense of fulfillment I feel from my garden. That is the real secret of a great garden. If it pleases you than you garden is doing it’s job and doing it well. So when you are thinking about adding new features to your garden be sure to explore all the possibilities. Fancy is nice but simple sometimes can be the best.
