The seeds for the early spring vegetables have started to germinate and are taking off a lot quicker than I thought. The seeds are for lettuce, arugula, mesclun mix, and baby spinach .
Once the plants get a little bigger and can be separated.
They will be moved to cell packs for a couple of weeks then moved to the garden plot.
This year I will be using raised beds in the vegetable garden and have been working on them. I have used them in the past but this year I am converting the whole garden over to them. I think the yield will be greater and a lot less work in maintenance of the garden especially weeding and watering. The benefits are that the whole tilling process will be eliminated and the soil will be loose and friable for the roots to establish them selves as well.
In addition I will be able to plant earlier in the year and also to grow a little latter in the fall by setting up low tunnels over some of the beds. This will enable me to increase the amount of crop production going to the table each year an extending the harvest of fresh vegetables well past the normal time frames..
