This week I will be harvesting leaf lettuce and arugula . I will be planting radish and the transplants will be going in Peppers, Tomatoes, Eggplant , Peas, Cantaloupe,as well as Watermelon. I will be preparing the squash bed as well as planting cucumbers this weekend if the weather cooperates.
Here is a picture of the snow peas as they start up the trellis. I use trellis made of welded wire sheets. These sheets work terrific and they are easy to install. Originally they were invented to be used as fencing but started to be advertised in catalogs in the early 1900’s to be used as concrete reinforcement. They can be found at any home improvement center or building supply. The nice thing is they come in handy 4′ x 8′ sheets. I have painted mine a hunter green color so they blend in nice with the landscaping. While painting is not necessary it will lengthen the life of these wire sheets and makes them cleaner to handle if they are not all rusty.
For those of you who have not yet prepared your garden beds please nix in as much organic compost as possible and even composted manure to help build the soil. Then get your plantings in. The difference in plant growth will amaze you.Your production and yield will increase tremendously as well. A well prepared garden bed will make your vegetable garden shine.
