The weather has been pretty rainy here this spring which is good and bad. I think a few more sunny days would have helped speed up the summer vegetables a bit but they are still doing fine. Using the sheet mulching and the raised beds has certainly cut down on maintenance a lot. I can not say I miss the weed pulling not even a little. It is certainly one way to make gardening more enjoyable. The idea of hard work gardens is really more a lack of planning and design than anything else. If you do a little work up front you can certainly enjoy your vegetable garden with out all that work in the heat of the summer.
A vegetable garden is really not that big of a project. I believe a lot of people over think and over plan and then get discouraged. Taking a practical approach I would start out small grow a couple of tomato plants a pepper or two and maybe a couple of cucumber vines. You can fit all this into a plot of 4 feet by 6 feet. This is the perfect size for a beginner after the first year you will not only have grown some of your own vegetables you will have grown your confidence as well.
A garden that rewards you with great tasting produce for very little effort will not only build your confidence it is most certain to get you to catch the gardening bug. As you go from year to year you will undoubtedly have some failures but they will be off set by many many successes. So why not dive in and try your hand at being a green thumb.
