For many the unofficial start of the gardening season is Mothers Day which means in less than 2 weeks we will see the gardens all springing up and tons of plants arriving at the local garden center daily. Some of us have started a bit ahead in the vegetable garden but this week may be a bit damp to do too much work.
For those that like to get a head start in the vegetable garden each year you may want to consider build raised beds. Not only will you no longer need to till but the ground will warm up sooner and make earlier planting possible. A word of caution though along with earlier planting comes the need for protection from frost as well. A simple low tunnel over the beds will make it a lot less likely that you will loose your early plantings.Using PVC pipe and covering with 4mil clear plastic will make a simple low tunnel that will help protect early and late crops from the ravages of frost. The only thing you need to watch for on really sunny days is the temperature inside may climb as much as 30 degrees or more than the outside temperature and could burn your plants out if you do not leave them vented that day.
Well I hope you are ready for planting cause I certainly am I can not wait for those fresh vegetables. Have a great week and get out in that garden!
