Well certainly this year is a big change from last years spring. The weather has been much warmer and the vegetable garden is really starting to pop. All the spring flowering plants came up and bloomed earlier do to the warmer weather. I expect this year we will have a large increase in insect damage as well do to the warm and moist conditions. I grew up in Miami Florida which is at it’s best warm and humid. I remember that it really never bothered me but I have been in Chicago pushing 25 years now and the humidity does affect me. I guess I would love 72 degrees and sunny year round but then again it may get a bit boring.
It is important to get the garden and yard ready for the upcoming summer months. Get all your flower beds mulched to help retain moisture and keep the weeds down. Weeds compete for food and moisture and will take away those things from desirable plants. Be sure that you water your lawn and flower beds deeply once or twice a week if the weather turns dry . At least 1″ of water a week. Also keep on the look out for insects. If caught early damage can be minimized. Dead heading annual flowers is not the most exciting job but will keep your annuals in full bloom and producing throughout the summer.
This might be a good year for those that have been thinking about it to install a water feature in your garden. The sounds of splashing water some how has a cooling effect on a warm summer afternoon. That and a strategically placed hammock could be a deadly combination to prevent you from getting you yard work done but you can’t beat for a relaxing way to spend an afternoon. Summer is coming and it is a time to relax and renew take time for yourself and family and enjoy. That is important don’t let life get in the way of living. There are always great activities going on in the summer from flea markets to festivals make some time to take some in.
Before I close I would be remiss if i did not offer congratulations to the Chicago Blackhawks in winning the 2010 Stanley Cup! I am not much of a hockey fan but I do no that it is a very demanding sport physically and mentally and that it was certainly a great accomplishment in these young men’s lives. Enjoy what you have done for certainly it should be one of your most outstanding achievements which no one can take away from you.
