Well it has been a long cold winter and now spring has arrived. You want to be outside and enjoying your garden and back yard pond. The only problem is when you went out to see what needs to be done you look in the pond and see this
This pond is obviously in need of a good cleaning. There is massive amounts of string algae and the pond is totally out of balance. The algae in the pond is so thick you can not even see the bottom of the pond.
This is a sure sign that the pond is way out of balance. Unfortunately it is something I see All too often! It can be cleaned but in a short time the problem will reoccur if the underlying conditions which cause it are not corrected.
In the case of this pond the problem was easy to diagnose because as I was removing the fish I was able to determine they were the cause. A balanced ecosystem requires all the parts to operate in harmony. If you throw the system out of balance the system starts to break down. When I removed the fish I was apparent that there was twice the number of fish that the pond could sustain.Too many fish will cause a lot of problems[/caption]
The more fish you have the more waste they will produce. If you are feeding too heavily than the fish will not consume all of the food and that will add to the imbalance when it breaks down.
If you do not have enough aquatic plants to help filter the water than algae quickly starts to grow in the nutrient rich water. That will lead to a need to do a cleaning and to try to put the system back in order. Once the fish have been removed empty the pond. You must try and remove as much algae as possible than treat the remaining algae with a good fish safe algaecide. After letting the algaecide work for about 30 minute power wash all the surfaces to remove the rest of the algae.
Clean up all the debris and wash down the pond several times to remove as much dirty water as possible. Clean your skimmer pads and biological filters and replace. Refill the pond be sure to add a chlorine remover and let it circulate for at least 30 minutes. Seed the pond and filters with good bacteria to help recolonize the bio filters and then reintroduce the fish but be sure to call out the numbers so that the pond will not be over crowded.
