Spring 2016 is due to arrive in 27 days which to me is an exciting event while not time to run out and start getting your vegetables in the ground it is a sign that the gardening season will soon be underway.
The tulips will not all be in bloom that day nor will we all experience the nice warming sunny spring days that energize us to get out and start digging in the good earth.
The most important thing about the arrival of Spring 2016 is that it is a notice that soon the weather will be changing and the earth will again awaken from it’s Winter slumbers. It is a time to get excited and to look forward to those days of living outdoors again.
My Spring 2016 Plans
By March 20th I will already be starting seeds for some of the early Spring Vegetables and doing Spring cleanup of the flower beds and winter debris removal. My hope is that the temperatures will reach the mid to upper 40s during the day as this is a great time to get out it is not too hot but the cool temperatures invigorate me.
By the second week in April if the weather will cooperate the spring greens will be in the cold frames and we will have fresh salad greens in a few weeks. I will also be starting seeds for summer vegetables and annual flowers in the green house.
The vegetable garden is ready for the new year and with that comes the anticipation that Spring 2016 will be the precursor to a bountiful Summer garden.
Even as I turn 62 next month the thought of Springs arrival gives me the same feelings of anticipation, joy and excitement that the coming of Christmas did when I was just a young 5 year old.
One of my all time favorite movies is Forrest Gump. I think that while it was about the life of a young man growing up it was a very real comparison to most everyday people . While there were many scenes that were memorable there were many lessons taught.
I think that the one idea that crept into my philosophy is that “Life is like a box of chocolates you never know what you are going to get”. I think that about gardening as well and that is one of the things that makes me look forward to getting up each day because you never know what will happen next and that makes things exciting.
