Yep less than two days from now the vernal equinox will occur. This is the day when the light and darkness are the same and the beginning of the earths warming and longer days will start for the Northern Hemisphere. While I look forward to Spring every year it is not always so Spring like and may make you think that winter will remain forever.
Actually a longer warming period is better than a quick warmup because there is always a chance of a freeze the will occur and kill flowers before they can be pollinated and fruit can start to form. Also as there are less pollinators when we go from very cold to warm in a short period
the plants may bloom to early.
Early Spring Gardening Tips
- Check Your Seeds – Check your saved seeds for germination by placing them on the edge of a paper towel and then rolling it up place in a warm place like the top of the refrigerator and mist the paper towel to keep it moist for 14 days. Unroll the towel and see how many seeds have germinated. If you have a low count either discard those seeds or seed much heavier.
- Avoid Dampening Off – Damping off is a major problem with young seedlings.caused by cold humid wet conditions with very poor air circulation. Indication of dampening off include curling wilting or collapse of seedlings. To help avoid this problem always use sterilized soil and containers, provide good air circulation and plenty of light, keep the soil a bit dry and use treated seed whenever possible.
- Clean Your Garden Tools – Be sure your tools are ready for the garden. Clean off rust and dirt with a wire brush. Treat your wood handles by wiping down with boiled linseed oil. Painting the handles in a bright color will make them easier to find in the garden. Mix a qt of motor oil with sand in a 5 gallon pail and plunge the tools in to the sand several times to coat the metal and protect them from rust.
- Preparing The Soil – Never work your soil when it is wet tilling or working the soil when it is wet will make it dry into large clods as hard as concrete. Check your soil if you grab a hand full and squeeze it it crumbles and falls apart it is ready, if it does not crumble then you need to wait a couple of more days and try again.
I know that I am chomping at the bit and I am sure you are too. Be Patient it shouldn’t be too long now!
