September A Garden Transition Month

September is a month of transition in the garden. The fall rains are starting and the nigh time temperatures are usually cooling down as the days grow a bit shorter. The summer vegetable harvest is quickly coming to an end as we hope for a few more vine ripe tomatoes to grace the table. But it is also is a busy time for gardeners. There is lots to do in the early fall garden.

Lawns are starting to come back from the summer heat. Time for renovation work dethatching, aeration, over seeding. A fertilizer application now and then a final one at the end of October. The fall blooming perennials are just starting to come into their own. Speaking of perennials now is a great time to divide them so that they can adjust and root in during the damp cool weather of the upcoming fall. Perennials that are divided every 3 to 5 years are healthy and look their best and also keep the garden from becoming overgrown and unmanageable.

Fall is also a season that allows us to spend some more time enjoying the weather as we go about our gardening tasks. With more temperate days the task of getting out the last of the summer weeds or mulching in the beds somehow seems much more enjoyable and relaxing. It is also a time to prepare for the planting of the spring flowering bulbs like crocus or tulips. The beds can be prepared at the end of September and the bulbs planted to get established before the winters cold sets in. The anticipation of a beautiful spring color display is motivation enough for planting these marvels of nature.

All and all September is a great month for gardening and a good time to finish any landscaping projects you have been putting off.
