In today’s economy many people are looking for ways to earn some extra income and gardeners are no exception. There are people all across the country that have moved on from their hobby of gardening and turned it into a full time business that makes them substantial sums of money. It is a lot easier than it sounds to be able to make a couple of hundred dollars on a weekend without ever leaving home. The best part is that you will be making money doing something you like to do.
Getting started is pretty simple and will not require that you invest hundreds of dollars you can actually get started for less than a hundred dollars. In the early 70’s when I was getting started in the horticultural industry I started out selling plants at the local flee market on the weekends. Most of the plants I sold where ones that I had grown myself. I was not getting rich but I was making between $150 to $300 on a Saturday and Sunday which was pretty good money back then. If you have a garden with perennials or flowering shrubs then you already have the makings of a hobby garden business.
If you have perennials in your garden then you know that every three to four years you need to divide the plants and replant the beds. Say you have an overcrowded bed of Hostas with 25 plants in it that has gotten way out of control. You can dig them up in the spring late March early April before the new leaves start to emerge and split each plant into 5 new plants. Replant one plant one of those back in the bed you are now left with 100 plants that you can pot into one gallon containers and by the end of May have 100 plants that you can sell. To purchase pots and potting soil will cost you about 60 cents per plant. Right now in my area the Wholesale price of a one gallon hosta plant is $4.95 if you would sell these plants you grew for say $3.75 you would make a profit of $315.00 after you paid for supplies. At the price people would line up to buy them.
One of my biggest sellers believe it or not where Coleus. People would go crazy and snap them up. I had 35 mother plants that I would take cuttings from. This is so simple that it is almost like stealing money. I would take the cuttings from the mother plant and strip off the bottom leaves leaving only the top 3 sets of leaves. I would plant the cuttings in a 4 inch pot of potting soil with the top about inch above the surface. I put the cuttings in a shady area and kept them watered, in six weeks not only had they rooted they actually had started to produce new growth and where ready for sale. These small plants would sell out fast at $1.50 each. Pots and planting mix cost 25 cents a plant each mother plant would produce at least 10 cuttings so that was 350 plants sold for $1.50 total sales $525.00 less the cost of material and supplies 350 plants times 25 cents is $87.50 leaving a profit of $437.50 . That not the best part after the six weeks the mother plants had grown back and where ready to have cutting taken again.
Even in a small back yard you can see from just the two examples above that there is money to be made. You can sell them at the flea market, a local farmers market, you can run a garage sale but make it a plant sale, you can even put a small sign up in the front yard Plants For Sale. You will be surprised how quickly word will get around once you have a few satisfied customers. You will be very pleased at how much money can be made doing something you love to do with out ever having to leave home.
