I am always antsy about now it it less than three months till Spring arrives and I already have a list . I guess I am a bit ahead of myself because the first day of winter started just ten days ago but now it is less than 3 months till Spring. I know that that sounds a bit neurotic but it is a big motivator on those cold overcast days when there is a layer of snow on the ground and you sit and gaze out the window at the still landscape.
Living in Chicago makes it hard to be too excited about winter. It is cold and damp and there piles of snow everywhere. I am grateful though that we were bypassed by this last big storm. A lot of people do not realize just how dangerous winter can be until a big metropolitan area like New York City is hit by a big storm.
As I am writing this the temperature outside is above freezing for over 24 hours now and will be in the mid 50’s today! The snow is quickly fading into the sewers as it is melting away. Latter today we will be getting some heavy rain then the temperature should slip back to the upper 20’s and low 30’s for the next week to ten days. Of course once the snow is gone there will be a big mess to cleanup because of all the papers and cans and bottles and what have you that were plowed up with the snow and hidden will be exposed. It is fine by me though because once the snow is gone it feels a bit warmer even when the temperature is low.
The Urban Garden
With spring arriving in less than three months there is a lot to do. Tomorrow is the first day of 2011 and as such the start of the new year. Things that were not attended to yet are now being put on the schedule. All the hand tools are being checked, repaired or discarded. I already have a list for the spring plantings going and fertilizer and supplies will be purchased by the end of the month under an early order program that will save us some money.
The Woodland Garden
This year I will be working hard on the woodland garden. It is the top of the list on my personal garden journal. I have been doing some research and have a list of new plantings I would like to try as well as some projects that have been on the back burner. There are some very interesting changes that I will be making and I will be documenting them as I go along . I will also be taking a look at some of the plants that can be grown in a woodland garden and giving you cultural information as well.
The Vegetable Garden
For 2011 I will be planting mostly heirloom varieties. I think that I want to get back to the older varieties because they are much more flavorful and I believe more prolific than some of today’s hybrids . I will also be doing a lot more composting as well as some  (composting with live worms), I think the more organic you can get with your garden the more tasty the produce will be.
Well this is certainly not all that will be going on at Glenns Garden this upcoming year it is a small preview. Please feel free to leave a comment with your thought on the matter and any subjects you would like to see covered. Have a HAPPY NEW YEAR and we look forward to seeing you here in 2011.
