Well Today we headed out to the woodland paradise and were in anticipating to get some work done today on some of the beds in the morning then set up the sprinklers and go fishing for a few hours.
Well when the temp hit 92 degrees at 11 AM we decided to change that plan even the shade of the cooling Oak Trees and the Water fall hitting the pond could not give us any relief. We ended up soaking the whole property for almost 5 hours do to the extreme dry conditions. That sand is just like a sieve the water just goes right through it. All the beds are heavily mulched so that helps but This is going to be the driest June since 1922 in Our Area so we really need to get that water on the grass and the flower beds.
If I had to do it over again I probably would have invested in a Semi-Truck full of mushroom compost to build up the top 4 or 6 inches of soil before putting in the grass but the trees have done well in the sand for so many years I did not want to change the structure and risk loosing any of the trees.
Grass You can always grow Trees that are 20 to 40 years old well you just can’t plant one of those. I think that when Mother Nature hands you this kind of weather you really need to do what ever you can but until the Sky’s open up and give up some of that magic elixir the water from the hose will have to do.
Even with all the heat and the fact that we had to retreat back home to the Condo this evening Our Piece of Paradise was still looking beautiful . As we were leaving the birds apparently appreciated our efforts as there were a couple of dozen hanging out between the feeders and the pond and 5 robins were out on the lawn pulling out those earthworms that were foolish enough to come up for a breath of fresh air. So we wished them Bon Apeitet and were on our way back to the city and the cooling mechanical machine that makes the heat go away.
