For the vast majority of the time, gardening is a wonderful hobby. Long sunny days spent outside, reveling in the sunshine on your face and the feel of dirt beneath your fingertips. From nothing but seeds, you coax life, vegetables, beautiful flowers that fill your garden with color and scent the air with their fragrance. Gardening is, in every way, its own reward.
Of course, it’s not all fun. For the pleasures that gardening brings, of course there have to be areas that you are less than enthusiastic about. These are the prices that you pay for the numerous benefits and you pay them willingly, seeing it as a fair exchange. With that said, that is not to dismiss those annoying gardening tasks – because they are just that: annoying. It doesn’t stop the need to do them, but sometimes, it’s helpful to have the chance to vent about the less pleasant side of this most glorious of hobbies – and a few ideas as to how to make them easier.
Grumpy Gardener #1: Getting Rid of Leaves
All summer long you throw yourself into making your garden look as beautiful as possible. Your flower beds are tended, your vegetables are ripening and you hum with quiet enjoyment of time spent outdoors absorbing your daily Vitamin D and then more besides.
Then fall comes and ruins, absolutely ruins, it all. The leaves are nice at first; orange, red and gold hues on the trees creating a stunning spectacle.
Then the fall for which the season is named begins, and you have leaves everywhere. They’re in the pool, they’re covering your carefully-cultivated fall flowers, they’re on walkways basically begging to be slipped on.
Make It More Bearable: In truth, there isn’t much you can do to make this more bearable – it’s part of nature! If you hate cleaning soggy leaves out, then companies like Integrity Pools can take that side of the job for you. That gives you more time to place netting over flowerbeds, which can be shaken loose as a whole rather than having to pick leaves up individually. Mostly, though, it’s just going to happen – and there’s no battle with Mother Nature that you can win to stop it.
Grumpy Gardener #2 – Bugs, Slugs and Pests Galore
Sometimes it’s tempting to think of gardening in a huge greenhouse, with protective coverings so that no bug can stroll onto your lettuce and grab a quick snack while it does so. Alas, this is neither possible nor feasible, so every few days you have to go to war with the pests who want to turn your hard work into their feast.
Make It More Bearable: You can turn some of the work over to other bugs, as the picture suggests. Ladybugs love aphids, so if you have an aphid problem, plant some ladybug-attracting plants and let nature take its course. There are plenty of other helpful creepy crawlies you can call in for reinforcements. Furthermore, a liberal planting of lemongrass can deter the nasty pests from wanting to invade in the first instance!
