Growing your own plants from cuttings is a great way to increase your garden. When I was young maybe about 9 or 10 I remember going on walks with my mother and visiting neighbors to ask if she could have a few cuttings of this plant or that plant that she had seen and admired.
My mom was an avid gardener and loved working out in her gardens. I think between her and my grandmother who lived across the street that is what inspired me to be a groundskeeper. The fact that I grew up down in Miami, Florida where you could garden all year was also a factor.
Not having the convenience of big box stores and not so many garden centers many people would opt for growing your own plants from cuttings instead of going to the plant nurseries, which were located out in the country. Now a day most people just go to the nearest shopping center and load a couple hundred dollars of plants from the big box and there they go off a gardening.
Well I have mixed emotions about that the old school part of me says that it would be better if they had to start their own plants in order to plant their garden learn the way I did. It would be great knowledge about the world around you and how things work.
On the other hand I realize that tens if not hundreds of thousands would never grow a garden at all because they don’t want to invest that much of their lives in a hobby. The fact that so many people participate in gardening at some level at all is just amazing.
If growing your own plants from cuttings is something that may be of interest to you I will be doing a series of post on the subject over the next month or so. I invite you to come back and read how I increase my garden using different plant propagation techniques.
