This years vegetable garden will be the best year ever! Well that is the hope I profess to myself each year.. So far I can tell you that the onions look like they will be a bumper crop and we will be eating radishes by the end of the month. The salad greens and lettuce should be ready by the 2nd week of May.
The luffa gourds well that will remain to be seen won’t be ready for at least 120 days putting the first harvest date around August 27th. A lot of things could go wrong by then . The optimist in me says big harvest but still a long ways off.
Want to get the tomatoes and peppers in but I think that is a least 3 weeks off those late frosts have burned me before and the gamble of earlier harvest are just not worth it in my mind.
This Years Vegetable Garden Hints
While preparing your vegetable garden this year think about what you are planting and be sure that you don’t over do any one thing unless you are planning on a way to utilize any extra harvests. There is nothing more disparaging then to see vegetables rotting in the garden because you can not use them all.
Plan on having the supplies you need on hand several weeks before harvest to can your extra harvests. If you don’t want to be bothered with the work of storing your excess it would be a great thing to check with local food pantries. A lot of them may not be setup to deal with fresh produce, but often times those that are run by church groups would welcome the chance to offer them to their clients.
This would not only solve your excess produce problem but would make you feel good because you would be helping those that otherwise may not have a chance to enjoy fresh produce.
No matter what you grow this year I wish you much success with this years vegetable garden!
