Often times my wife threatens to bury me out in the garden, and if it were legal in this community I have no doubt she would. If I really thought about for a bit I think that I would not mind it at all.
Every Day Is An Adventure
In my garden every day is an adventure during warming Spring days as my favorite flowers start to poke their heads up out of the ground ,to the dead of winter when the squirrels and birds feast on the food that I leave for them there is always something interesting to see.
Even after a snow or ice storm Mother Nature provides natural art as the snow or ice decorates the trees and shrubs with a coating of variations or patterns. While certainly my little garden can not compare to the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone Park, Mother Nature insures that there are just as many interesting things that go on every day be it above or below ground.
Luck Of The Draw
I was lucky enough to be born and raised in Miami Florida, and especially lucky to be born and raised before the invention of video games. Well there was pong! I spent most of my first 28 years of life outdoors because of the climate, well they made me come in during the Hurricanes. I lived about 20 minutes from the Everglades, and 30 minutes from Biscayne Bay, not to mention some really cool Marsh land just about 8 blocks up the street.
As I mentioned before in other post my Grandmother who lived across the street would let me come over and help her in the yard and helped me plant my first vegetable garden. She grew African violets on the window sills inside the house and here yard was a maze of flowering plants and tropical fruit trees. Not to mention cool bugs, lizards, skinks, snakes, box turtles, and my favorite the toads. I have toads in my garden today but not like the giant Bufo_Marinus toads down in Miami they were huge Mumbo Jumbos.
So with a new adventure outside my front door everyday I could hardly wait to get out and see what was going on. While today’s generations spends a lot of their time playing videos I think they may be missing out on the world around them.
Gardening as a whole is a very relaxing get away from the everyday pressure of living and it you let yourself be emerged in the tasks you are performing it can be very therapeutic. Yes I know that pulling weeds sounds a lot more like work than therapy but as you are pulling weeds you may find some new volunteer plants coming up that you did not know were there, or perchance find a praying mantis sitting still on a branch waiting patiently for an insect to come along to fill it’s belly and protect your plants.
These little distraction while doing gardening chores grabs your attention and helps to push your problems and worries away for a brief period of times that will relieve some stress and make you feel refreshed. You may even come up with a solution to some problem you have been working on once you take a break from it and let your mind wander else ware. I know it happens to me quite often I will be doing a chore and all of a sudden the answer to something just pops into my mind.
Through the years I have been able to pursue my passion and spend a lot of my time doing what I like to do most which while it has not made me wealthy, has certainly made me happy. My hope is that you will find your passion and find that which makes you truly happy and pursue it.
