Therapy is a strange word to describe gardening I know, but I think it is appropriate and fits well. When you have an injury after treatment you will go to physical therapy to help get your injured body part working normally and strengthening it.Then sometimes in life your injury is not of a physical nature but caused by stress and anxiety and you seek counseling to help you sort through your problems. It is similar to what happens when you garden. Working in your garden is great exercise and helps give you better physical stamina. It is also a great way to help you relieve some stress from every day life. Your goal while working in the garden should be to leave the office and your personal problems behind and seize the moment to escape and enjoy what you are doing.
When ever I have a lot on my mind I find it hard sometimes to concentrate and feel edgy and tense. When this starts to happen to me I realize that it is time to take a break. No matter what is bothering you taking a thirty minute recess will not stop the problems or even resolve them any faster. What a recess will do is provide you a few minutes of time away from the stress and help you think more calm and clearly about what you have to do, when you get back to what is bothering you. This is a great time to head out to the garden.
When I am stress it sometimes takes a few minutes to settle down and decide what type of chore I want to get started on in the garden. If I am really stressed I find the best thing to do is to take a couple of deep breathes with my eyes closed. When I open my eyes I slowly start to look around and the first thing I see that needs to be done is the chore I start with. This is very important as what you want to do is shift your focus onto something which is completely different than what is bother you. The last thing you want to do is to add more stress by looking at all the garden chores that haven’t been done. It does not matter what the chore it maybe a couple of weeds that you just notices or as simple as a piece of rubbish that has blown into a bush that is the point that you start from. The whole idea is redirect your focus then move onto another chore. Once you have yourself absorbed in what you are doing you will start to feel better and the stress will subside. You may even get so lost in what you are doing that your thirty minutes recess may turn into an hour and a half. That is okay too. Don’t worry about it, you needed the break.
A garden is a place of enjoyment and beauty it should invite you in and soothe your spirit and feel you with warmth. A garden is also a healin place where you can go lick your wounds and rejuvenate yourself.
