Garden ponds have become very popular the last ten years or so. The industry has evolved and now garden pond equipment is not only affordable, but a decent size pond is a homeowner do it yourself project that can be completed in a couple weekends. A word of caution however you do get what you pay for. A low price garden pond kit is just that. The equipment and liner are okay but they are not made to last twenty years or more.
I would suggest that the lower price kits only be purchased if you are think of removing the water feature after three to five years or if you are dabbling to see if water gardening is for you.
A good quality garden pond kit will cost between eight hundred and twenty two hundred dollars depending on the size pond you want to build. The kit will come complete with everything you need to build a pond including instructions. The three things it does not come with are labor, rocks and pebbles, and landscape these will be an additional cost. This could add another four hundred to twenty five hundred dollars or more depending how elaborate you want your pond to be. If you are going to skimp on anything here is the place to do it. Landscaping can be done a little at a time once your pond is in and running.
Once your pond is up and running you will find that your garden takes on a whole new dimension and will quickly become the focal point of your free time. Evenings and weekends will be spent out by the pond watching as it turns into a hub of activity. The water will draw many garden creatures both large and small. Suddenly one day you will notice frogs have appeared. The dragonflies will be hovering and dancing over the water. All kinds of butterflies will appear to enjoy the flowers around the pond. Before you know it the whole neighborhoods bird population will be stopping by for a cool refreshing drink or a dip in the fancy new bird bath.
The one big thing I must warn you about is that water gardening can become addictive. If you start out small you can work your way up but once addicted you will need some discipline when you head to the pond store. Those waterlilies and lotus and fish really start to add up. Sometimes I believe that water gardening is a whole garden all by it’s self but one of the most fascinating. I know it is one that returns so much more for the money invested because it is ever changing and a home to so many creatures and certainly a deversion from everything around you.
