It is time to start thinking about the chores that must be done before the bad weather starts to set in. Instead of the usual tips about fall lawn fertilization and cleaning up the flower beds I would like touch on one or two other subjects.
Winter is coming and so is the snow. It is very important that your snow removal equipment be working and in proper order. Now is the time to get your snowblower in for a tuneup and to be sure it is in good working order. The sooner you get it to the shop the better. Once the snow season arrives it is going to take some time to get it repaired if it is not working and that wont get the driveway or sidewalk cleared.
You should also check your shovels and ice chipper to make sure they are in good shape. If they are in need of replacement do it now . Dont be standing in line at the hardware store after a snow storm.
Stock up on a couple of bags of salt and deicers so that if you need them you can quickly get the area back to a safe condition. Early winter is a perfect time for an ice storm and the worst of all the winter storms.
One last chore which you should get on right away it could save your life.
Be prepared. Make sure you have an emergency kit in your car in case you get stranded it should include the following:
Emergency kit
Flares/reflectors
Shovel
Jumper cables
A bag of kitty litter for traction
A flashlight with spare batteries
Blankets and large plastic bags for warmth
Extra clothing including mittens
A 3 pound empty coffee can, candles and matches, for melting snow
Food and a metal cup.
This is a very important precaution and one which you should heed. You never know when you will need it and hope you never do but if you do you dont want to wish you had it!
