Remembering back it seems that this is the earliest Spring that I have ever seen. Certainly the colors are arriving way earlier than nature intended. This photo was taken yesterday March 26, 2012 Lilacs In March?
While I’m no rocket scientist I believe this may be a sign that the annual Lilac Festival in Lombard Illinois scheduled for May 20th this year may be a bit of a disappointment. More so than anything else I think that this just goes to show you how unpredictable the weather really is. Planting guides and frost dates all have their place but as a gardener you need to keep up with the weather in your local area.
For those of you who are brave this may be a good time to experiment with some early vegetable plantings I suggest cold hardy vegetables. The last Average Frost date for Chicago is April 20th. By all means this is just a guess based on past history. I clearly remember back In the early 1990’s that a freeze occurred around the 20th of May . I lost my pepper and tomato plants. That set me back some. The local farmstead lost all their crops for summer that day and had to rush to plant over all the acres they lost. It was a significant loss as they had to hustle to buy hundreds of pepper and tomato plants not to mention the labor involved.
So while I have already planted the potatoes and have some early spring salad greens in the cold frame I have this feeling this year that the weather will cooperate and there will be no need to lower the lid on the cold frame.
Of course if I knew the future for certain I would have already won the lottery.
