Many times I will see a visitor in my garden even though they are cute and destructive ground squirrels I can not bear the thought of getting rid of them.
In this particular case my outdoor speakers by the patio had stopped working.I checked the wiring at the stereo and all was in order so I went out to the junction box by the patio to cheek if some thing had happened there.
There was something wrong all right when I removed the cover to the irrigation control box that I was using as my junction box it was filled with over a 5 gallon pail of dirt and peanuts.Oh and did I mention the chewed up speaker wire?
While I was gone to empty the bucket the little marauder came back and was deperatly trying to salvage the few remaining peanuts.See the video.
That got me to thinking about the 10 station irrigation system in the yard that I had not turned on for four years. The reason that I had not used it is the wife put the kibosh on it after the 4 grand kids and the Step Daughter had move in and my wife saw the first $300.00 a month water bill. Apparently clean kids are more important than green grass.
I decided to check it out and went and removed the lid on the valve box sure enough the cute and destructive ground squirrels had turned that into another food storage area as well. The difference this time is small pieces of solenoid wire spread throughout the dirt.
This will be expensive but no time to fuss with it now too much to do with splitting and transplanting the perennials .and general garden cleanup. This will probably have to wit till Spring.
Yes I still enjoy the antics of those critters running around the garden as they go about their days work I just wish they would take up residence closer to their food source in the neighbors yard that goes through 30lbs of peanuts a week feeding his beloved squirrels.
Did I mention how cute and destructive ground squirrels are?
