April And The Spring Weather Is Here

Finally after a long and dreary winter the spring weather has finally arrived here at the urban garden. We will be very busy this week working on turf cleanup and renovation. The beds are all finished around the building and we have started working in the parking lot planting islands.  Along with the spring weather of course comes the cleanup of the winter debris so the parking lot curb lines as well as the roadway curbs need to be swept. There are 5 storm sewers in one of the lots that need replacement as well. The asphalt is crumbling and cracking because the brick sewer rings have deteriorated so we will need to have them replaced with concrete rings very shortly.

This has been a long winter and I feel very far behind because the weather has just been so hard. Now with the quick warm up we are racing to get the early spring work done. The spring flowering bulbs have all broken ground and I expect some of the daffodils will be blooming this week. It makes it harder to clean the beds when you have to work around the emerging bulbs so the work takes a bit longer.

I have been a bit lacks in my post as of late because of the winter of course and several other projects I have been working on. I hope to be back up to speed in this area in the next week or so and start adding photos again to the album.

I hope you all have a chance to get out and enjoy your gardens this week. I was out at the woodland garden on Saturday and spent several hours burning and raking leaves. I think I spent more time burning than raking but it was a great day to be out there nice and quiet and the smell of burning leaves always makes me feel good. I know that I will need to get real serious this weekend coming up but it was nice to just take it easy and enjoy the day.

Have A Great Week!

Hi there! I just came across your blog while looking up other area gardeners for my Chicagoland blogroll. I’m in the Northwest suburbs, & I had to laugh at your post about the snow. Yes, I’m one of the poor saps who got socked with snow when you got only 3/4″. So, you’re not alone in thinking that this past winter was a long one.
