Since early times people have recognized the benefits and the healing qualities of gardens. As far back as the middle ages gardens were created were people could go and heal physically and mentally. Today hospitals and health care facilities are doing the same thing and call them healing gardens.
With the fast pace we all seem to live in it is very easy to understand the need to relive our self from stress and find a way to recuperate. Creating your own healing garden may be just the answer to help you to restore some balance to your overstressed body and mind. A place were you can go and decompress and relax and leave your cares and worries outside the gate.
Creating your own healing garden is not so hard there are basic elements that you will need to incorporate when designing your garden. To start out a tall hedge or fence to screen the area and allow for privacy is essential. Try to locate the garden in a quiet area away from the sounds from traffic and other intruding noises. You will also want to give yourself a comfortable place to sit. Be sure to add a focal point a rock, water fountain, or statue something you can use to focus on as you meditate. Remember one of the key elements is to keep it simple. Do not clutter up the area or make it too busy.
You will need to incorporate features for the senses as well. Plant fragrant shrubs or flowers along the walkway or near your seating. Use fragrant ground cover along the edge of your walks that will emit a wonderful fragrance when steeped on. Plant some edible fruits, herbs or plants to help you stimulate your taste buds. Just as important add soothing sounds to your healing garden using wind chimes or the calming sounds of water in a fountain or waterfall.
Adding medicinal plants such as Lavender, Echinacea, other herbs that flower and encourage wildlife is an excellent idea. Though they are usually grown for medicinal reasons they require little maintenance and are add very attractive blooms that last for a long time. Be sure to add some color into the plantings. Vibrant warm colors like reds and oranges can give you energy while the cooler colors like blues and greens have a calming effect.
Remember this will be your own special place to go and restore and heal yourself from the daily stress. Fill the area with mementos of positive experiences such as an ornament picked up on a vacation or special trip. It could be a rock or a wind chime something that will help give positive memories.
Most important when you go to visit your garden let it’s restorative power work for you. Before you enter take a deep breath then slowly let it out. Slow down and let yourself soak in all that surrounds you and after a short time in your healing garden you will feel much better and ready again to take on the world.
